Difference between selling and licensing a work
Selling a work is to provide a digital copy of it for private use, for example, when talking about a song, to be able to put the song in her/his mp3 player to listen to it.
On the contrary, to license a work is to obtain a specific permission to use the work in some specific given context outside the purely private one, such as, again with a music example, to use the song on the soundtrack of a video game or movie.
